SCRIPT EXCERPT:

Good evening, my little pleasure seekers and welcome to a night of delicious debauchery. Tonight we may wear masks, but not to hide behind. But.. to revel behind. Tonight we lay down the mask we wear every day and put on the mask we secretly desire to be. We celebrate the beautiful freedom we have to satisfy our deepest fantasies, liberate ourselves from inhibitions and indulge in our curiosity. What lies behind the mask, is up to you.

For hundreds of years, the Venetian Carnevale has created a space for the ordinary to become extraordinary. Each year millions of revellers descend upon the floating city as it awakens to Spring. Within this beautiful Italian jewel, a place opens where time stands still and artistic pleasure is enhanced only by imagination.

Tonight, I will be your guide into a space of bliss, lust and mischief. And don’t worry, I am incredible at keeping secrets. Because of course.. What is a secret, but a truth in masquerade?

Welcome my dear ones.. to Revelry.

CROWD NOTES TO USE FOR IMPROVISATION VIDEO:

Select one of the following topics and talk to your camera as if they’re an audience member you’ve decided to interact with.

  • the audience member is wearing a fabulous outfit and you’d like to compliment them and also cheekily address how wonderful YOU look as well

  • you decide to sit down at a table with an audience member and tell them a story about the last Carnevale you attended in masked anonymity

  • you speak to the audience about a dancer on the stage in a frozen tableaux and discuss how they’re feeling as they indulge in a moment of pure liberation (ie. “would you look at her? She’s definitely having the best night of her life…” etc)

  • your choice! Tell any short story to the crowd but like you are talking to an audience member and engage with them as if they are answering questions

ABOUT THE PROJECT

We are seeking 1 lead Vancouver actor and 1 lead Victoria actor to take part in our live stage shows at Celebrities Nightclub and Capital Ballroom, which includes 150+ dancers per cast. If we end up selecting 2 actors, one will perform in Vancouver’s shows and the other will perform in Victoria’s shows. It is possible we will cast a Vancouver performer and also have them perform in Victoria, in that case, accommodations and travel would be provided on top of the rates above.

Revelry liberates and celebrates the deviant nature from which Heels dance was born. What mysteries await beneath the Venetian mask? Step into our hedonistic hideaway, where everyone is free to become anything they desire. Whether you imagine yourself in Versace or Venetian lace, Murano glass or Milano leather - you’ll feel like an elaborate work of art in this ode to being the most. Beyond the fantasy, we also explore the feeling of “unmasking” and celebrating who we are with abandon. The show features a live Host who takes us through a journey of all the magic that has been created over the years of Venetian revelry, and even shares personal accounts of mischievous encounters. The musical soundscape will weave together genres and styles, extravagant costumes will dazzle the stage, and every dancer will perform sensually satisfying choreography regardless of your level!

AUDIENCE INTENTION:

Inspired by the Carnevale di Venezia, is an invitation to shed the boxes and explore how it feels to become anything and everything you imagine. It’s a celebration of places where we feel safe to express the full range of our identities through art and play. First we explore how the anonymity of a mask or disguise allows us to gleefully and mischievously explore sides of ourselves otherwise considered “taboo”. Then we unravel into the debauchery that follows when we conquer fear, shed inhibition, and become whoever we want. We reach a turning point where our characters are faced with the opportunity to reclaim their power and take up space, even without obscurity. Finally, we end with an unapologetic celebration of the freedom to express your weird and wonderful self, liberated from shame. We intend to transform our venue into a Masquerade event that weaves together brocade-inspired decor, visual artwork, and of course, sensational entertainment.

STUDENT/DANCER INTENTION:

This term we’re inviting you to become anything and everything you dream to be onstage. Our dance practice will focus on embodied choreography, sensual indulgence, and liberation from inhibitions. You’ll be encouraged to go bigger, bolder and weirder than ever. Our Teachers will focus on intricate musicality in an expanded range of genres, and Directors will focus on sexual sovereignty. The show concept is thematic, allowing for more individual interpretation and self-expression. All characters are representations of the human experience, and we will especially encourage dancers to play with gender and sexual expression. Costuming themes range from risqué to Renaissance, and while masks will be an aesthetic motif of the show, dancers will not be required to wear cumbersome masks while dancing.

Actors will be performing/hosting live, having practiced a script and general speaking points in advance with our Director. Ad-libbing will be essential to their success in this role as we want the audience to be interacted with. Onstage movement is required, but actual choreographed dancing is not. If our cast lead(s) end up having dance experience, we may incorporate them into choreography or allow them to improvise movement.

As our story is fundamentally about existing/creating a world outside the oppressive systems of our current society, we are specifically seeking actors identifying as members of equity-seeking groups, including but not limited to: Black, Indigenous, and other racialized peoples; LGBTQIA+, trans and gender diverse folks; neurodivergent folks and folks with disabilities or chronic illness; and folks with diverse body sizes. Please note that both the rehearsal and performance venues have stairs and no elevator or lift, and are thus unfortunately inaccessible for wheelchair use.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

“Host with the Most”

Age: 19+

Gender: Any gender identity, but must be comfortable with performing gender fluidity

Preference is given to actors with experience performing Drag

Description: The central character in Revelry. This character will be the Audience guide through our show. In each scene, they will share stories, set themes, interact with an audience and lead our crowd through a variety of experiences told through dance.

While we are very open to any type of human applying for this role, an ideal actor would have an energetic enthusiasm for the stage. They would feel comfortable with dry humour, over-the-top storytelling and major costume/makeup changes. We are looking for someone who can be playful, flirty, powerful and emotive. The role can at times feel immortal, omniscient and overbearing, but at times will be softer and more relatable to the audience. We would like to see someone with a wide range of personalities!

Some script memorization is required, but ad-libbing will be crucial as it is the majority of the performance. Must be comfortable acting/engaging the audience live, and comfortability with dance/movement is a significant asset.

INTIMACY/COSTUMING

The role does not require staged intimacy or physical touch with other actors. There may be moments of physical connection with dancers but only at the discretion and comfort of the cast Host. Actors should be aware that the show and dance numbers do feature sexual themes. Costuming will be flexible to suit the level of comfort of the actor, but our intent is to feature a wide variety of looks, ranging from fully adorned to scantily clad and leaning into a variety of gender expressions. Wearing full face masks will be a requirement at times.

ACCESSIBILITY:

Getting There
Both rehearsal and performance venues are located on Davie Street, just off Burrard, and are within walking distance from multiple bus routes.

Parking
Free parking is located on Burnaby Street, otherwise, we suggest the Sandman parking lot or meters out front.

Wheelchair Accessibility
Regretfully, both the rehearsal space and the performance venues have stairs and no lift or elevator and are thus inaccessible by wheelchair.

Gender-Neutral Washrooms
Both rehearsal and performance venues have designated gender-neutral washrooms available.

COVID-19 Safety Protocols
Glow Studios Inc. and Luminesque Dance abide by all government-issued regulations and requirements surrounding COVID-19 safety. All changes leading up to and including the show dates will be made if required by BC Government official mandates. This includes but is not limited to live performance, indoor events, fitness classes and WorkSafe measures.
